It was a great Thanksgiving dinner! But alittle pricey.
We reserved a table for Thanksgiving since we were visiting San Francisco over the holiday week. I specifically chose First Crush because they offered a holiday menu that had fish and vegetarian options for me and my husband, as well as traditional turkey for my daughter. My husband ordered the vegetarian casserole and it was FROZEN in the middle. He requested that it be returned and got the salmon instead. The rest of the food was mediocre at an inflated price (65/person). The restaurant tacked on a 20% gratuity. Our server was great and we would've given him 20%, but I found it irritating that this was added on for a table of 3 (as well as an additional service tax tacked onto the gratuity...maybe a SF thing? There were 3 different taxes on our bill.)
The music was loud and at one point the CD started skipping. I wish I had paid more attention to other reviews. This was not worth the almost 300 we paid. In hindsight, I wish we had gone to a local diner.
I was disappointed that because it was the week of Thanksgiving, they didn't offer specials and they didn't carry any bread. It was strange.
The Resturaunt was poorly staffed. Server and hostess not friendly. Food was so so. Would not go back. We went before the theatre.
We were in the area for business and wanted a light meal with wine. We had walked by earlier in the day and decided this was appropriate and it certainly was. We shared the Brussel Sprouts and a cheese plate. Both were generous. The sprouts were nicely done - not overcooked despite advertised as blackened - cooked with bacon. The cheese selection was very good. Bread was ample, fresh (crisp crostini with cheese plate). Seating is 'intimate' with little space between tables. The tables on either side were occupied, each in deep conversation. We did not find it intrusive. The view is street level with the floor below street. Reasonable view of the passing cars and people. This isn't far from major hotels and worth trying.
Brussels were incredible! Wine options were ok but not exceptional for a wine restaurant.
Took forever to take our order, and we're not very helpful when asking about the menu. Servers did not seem like they wanted to be at work.
Get a new cook. Awful cioppino.
Our experience was excellent the service was great the food was delicious and can't say enough about how we were treated. Would definitely recommend to others.
The wine was amazing and paired so nicely to the fabulous variety of food served. We tried a variety of dishes - beet salad and chicken were nicely prepared, the flavors were amazing. We left feeling like we had found a gem in Union Square area. Enjoy!
Unfortunately the food took over an hour to arrive. There was 1 server and 1 support staff.
My sense is that they were unprepared for the number of tables. The waitstaff was friendly, but overwhelmed. Nice bread and dips, and it was great to have a bottle of water available on the table. With so options in San Francisco, I'd suggest trying another.
This was a terrible experience. My plate was dirty, the service was terrible, and the food was just a huge salt dump.
I had out of town guests and I was embarrassed by this.

Cute place. Good food. However, we were tucked away in a corner and the waiter rarely came by. They forgot to put in our entrée orders and we waited for over an hour before they figured it out.
Food here is very good but the service was very disappointing. The waiter brought out the side dish 30 minutes before the main dish, forgot that we were splitting the dishes and didn't even acknowledge the lack of attention. Usually they have a very good wine list but was different than what was on the website. They also ran out of the wine we were drinking.
Restaurant was very close to my hotel on a recent business trip and menu said they had mussels which I dearly love. It was early and the restaurant was pleasant and quiet. The server was managing the entire restaurant and did an admirable job. The mussels were not good. They were very small, which is fine, but they were overcooked. Have to be very careful when the mussels are small not to oversteam them. The broth was very flavorful with saffron, wine, a little chili flakes and a light tomato base. Good for dipping but the bread was stale - it's what happens when you place average focaccia in a warm oven for too long. The beet salad was good but way too large. Only finished half of it. I did not like the wine. My fault since I am underwhelmed by California whites and pinks (this location specializes in California wines).
The ambiance was nice so I might try it again next time I'm in town, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return.
We made areservation at 8:45 and were informed that the kitchen closes at 9. The food was bland and the service was poor at best. They gave us a cocktail list and when I ordered one, they told me they didn't have anything for cocktails. I will never return and will not recommend this resturant.
There were four of us for dinner. We arrived at 6pm and mentioned that we had ticket to a show at 8pm. The first part of the meal/service was good - server was attentive, drinks and appetizers arrived in a reasonable time and the beet salad, pear salad and lobster mac and cheese were good. Then I suspect they got busy and the server wasn't as attentive -long delay between starters and entrees; two meals came out about 5 minutes or so before the other two; the entrees were not as good - chicken and risotto was not that flavorful and the veggies in the risotto not fully cooked; lamb pops not that good and tostada salad had an odd flavor.
I would go back for appetizers and drinks, but not a full meal.
I've dined here a few times, but it just wasn't the same this time and we won't be back. The food was bland and the wines by the glass/flight list seemed much shorter. We heard someone at the bar mention a change of ownership?
Decided to try it on Friday night.. The atmosphere was great, the servers tried their best but the food just wasn't up to par. We ordered lamb chops and a seafood dish. The lamb chops were either too fatty or burnt- the server brought us out more to try and compensate but they were just as fatty.. The seafood was Ok in a spicy broth but the calamari were very chewy - inedible. We left them on the plate. The server said that the dessert would be on the house due to our dissatisfaction- but we weren't hungry and just ordered a glass of Malbec which was listed on their dessert menu. It was too sweet. We were just disappointed overall but there was nothing the servers could do as the food was just bleh.. Maybe we ordered the wrong things.. Apparently the brussel sprouts at table next to us were a big hit- maybe the chef is better with non meats.. ? When the bill came they charged an extra 6% on top of tax and the server explained that it's for their health insurance since they have less employees than the company will sustain... We thought it was weird but mostly were just annoyed at this point about the whole experience. Wouldn't recommend.
Great restaurant. Service was fantastic. Owner was friendly and engaging.
I was very disappointed with the bread service. The focaccia tasted stale and overbaked, it was tough to tear apart, the pesto looked murky and didn't taste right.
Perhaps my next criticism would be a difference of opinion, but I thought the pear salad was too sweet and over drenched in the lemon vinaigrette, so it was difficult to appreciate the other potential flavors of the other ingredients.
The tortadas were difficult to eat. They are listed under small plates , but they are in no way small plates. They were a full meal on their own. Fortunately the waitress informed me of this in advance, but they should really relabel it on the menu.
Since a number of restaurants in the area are consistency excellent in terms of of the cuisine, I wouldn't come back here.
Wondering what to eat for our last dinner in San Francisco, after five days of rather heavy food, we searched for a place where we can quietly enjoy wine.
It turned out to be a good choice! An extensive wine list of California wine fitted our requirement. And the food was actually good, too. Although the "small plates" were actually not that small, it was perfect for sharing. The lobster mac 'n cheese was a plate I never encountered before and it hit the spot!
Small plates and entrees so good for those who don't have huge appetites.
Review of First crush San Francisco September 18, 2016. The quantum Merlot was terrific and reasonably priced, medium to full body with nice like spice flavorful; good with chicken or meat but also with spicy fish. The coconut crusted shrimp were overcooked and almost black and came on a bed of greens and radishes with strange salt and vinegar dressing. Their was no fine taste to it. Would strongly recommend the tuna tartare with avocado appetizer with taro chips. Very tasty on the bed of seaweed. Service was so, so; had to ask for napkins and sharing plates. Have been before and had reasonably good meals; this Sunday evening meal was disappointing.
My favorite dish of the night -Lamb Lollipops! The Stuffed Portobello is a hearty vegetarian option.
The First Crush was a great find visited by the locals , as we learned during our San Francisco vacation. Service was good and we were able enjoy ourselves with no interruptions. The food was varied and the wine list is extensive with a casual, welcoming atmosphere.
My husband and I had an early pre-theatre dinner last week at First Crush. We shared a pear salad which was excellent, although it could have used a few more pear slices. I had the coho salmon and ordered it med-well. It was cooked perfectly and delicious. My husband had the airline chicken and also thought it was very good. I had a glass of Francis Ford Coppola's rose wine and it was perfect with the salmon. All in all a great experience.
The whole experience was terrible. The restaurant was completely understaffed. I had 3 different people come up to me and ask for our order. Food took forever. To top it off, the restaurant offered us a free dessert, but it took so long to get there we left without ever getting it. We had been to this restaurant years before and it was not the same. Something has gone wrong.
It was a busy night at First Crush. They had a private party which overworked the kitchen That was fine but our waiter was really overwhelmed. After all the tables around us that had arrived and ordered after us received their orders I flagged down our waiter He attempted to explain the orders are completed in order of delivery to the kitchen. He looked frazzled. After he stepped away I looked at my friends and said he never put in our order. Sure enough I was right. But this story is a good story. The owner, Amanda, took the time to speak to us. Sure enough I was right but Amanda explained she had recently promoted our waiter from being a bus boy - in fact she said her best bus boy. Our wine was comped as was a dessert we shared. First Crush is a great find in the union square area. Amanda is a small business owner trying to help folks in her employ get ahead. Her menu is great. Go. You won't be disappointed.
This is a nice restaurant conveniently located near union square theaters and shops. The food is very good, the service is friendly and you don't have to shout at your dinner guests in order to be heard.
They mixed up our orders. I ordered my burger medium and received it well done. My wife ordered hers well-done and received it medium. We had to switch plates after first bite. The food was very unremarkable. The burger was very much lacking any flavor. Same with the fires. The Beer was good but the credit there goes to the Sierra Nevada brewery.
The quality of food was ok, but overpriced for what it was. We have lived in SF for over 10 years and the staff is definitely use to tourists, I don't want to say tourist trap but this place has all the ingredients for it. Great location and everyone was friendly, but they should revisit food quality/presentation with their prices being where they are - but it's like due to it being a high rent area.
Great wine selection, beautiful Brazilian, jazz background music, delicious food, no pressure during a leisurely family reunion dinner.

Great little place, went there for our anniversary. Waitresses extremely pleasant and was appreciative of us being there. Good value as the portions were good but tasting amazing.
Good menu and wine list. Restaurant is small and in our case, very noisy as we were seated adjacent to two tables of seven women. There was a table in back corner, never used. When we entered, we were one of a few couples seated. If it were known that two tables of 7 would be next to us, then we should have been seated differently.
This was a horrible experience. Looking at the ratings and what we experience was horrible. The food was not good. We ordered the steamed mussel but it was so fishy and the host did not bother to ask if there was a reason our food was untouched. My entree of the seafood ciappino was just lots of celery. Overall we do not recommend or return to this restaurant.
Food was very tasty and generous portions. Nice selection of wines. Staff was courteous but long wait between courses. Tables a bit close for my preference. Difficult to hold a private conversation.
This restaurant was listed as the top 50 most popular by Opentable but not sure why. We arrived for our reservation with no one at the host station. I saw a waiter walk by us twice never acknowledging us. When he took another couple to their table I flagged him down and asked if someone was working the host station. He said he'd be right back. He seated us and then came back for our drink and apps order. It took 45 MINUTES for us to get our waters and my husband still had not received his wine. When our app showed up we asked about the wine. No apology and he just acted like we were asking for the first time. Good shows up. STILL no wine. We ask again. No apology but he asks what wine it was since he forgot. He brings the wine but then we never see him again. Our table is now full of plates because he never took anything away. Someone else clears our table, offers more water and handles the check. These were the only two people I saw running the whole restaurant including the bar. So I'm guessing that's why this was such a horrible experience. I'll never go back. Don't go there if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner either. The noise level is through the roof. We had to nearly shout to hear each other. And the rest of the reviews are right, food is overpriced for what you get. Nothing special
